These best sci-fi movies will satisfy your love for science fiction
Big fan of sci-fi? It’s traditionally one of the hardest genres to bring over from the page to the screen. With so many epic sci-fi novels out there (often written by scientists) laying out complex worlds, alien civilizations, and utopian/dystopian political and social orders, finding a half-decent new movie can be tough.
Of course, there was the 80’s sci-fi classics like The Terminator, Back to the Future, Tron, Bladerunner, and Star Wars - but they were always movies, and as far as sci-fi TV shows went… well, we’re not saying there’s no value in Star Trek, but come on now, times change. With the advent of Netflix and Amazon TV, billions of dollars are being pumped into original new series of multiple genres - and sci-fi has become one of the most popular choices for great new shows and movies that are building up loyal followers thanks to their epic storylines (often based on books), high budget special effects, and top class acting. In this article, we’ll go through some of the best new sci-fi releases in recent years, so you know what to watch. We’ll also list some great sites to watch them all for free. The best new sci-fi movies With so much new stuff coming out at the moment, it’s hard to keep up. In this article, we’ll stick to the movies to make things a little easier to digest. We’ll come back to TV shows in a future article. Don’t worry, we won’t throw in any spoilers. Annihilation - 2018
This was an instant hit. Being released straight to Netflix (which usually spells doom), the movie proved to be a well thought out masterpiece. Director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, writer of The Beach, 28 Days Later) gives us a deeply character-based story that explores the fragility of humans and our self-destructive nature.
The movie follows Natalie Portman as she and her fellow scientists enter a mysterious alien phenomenon called ‘the shimmer.’ The shimmer is a blur that emerged from a lighthouse after an asteroid collided with earth - it then preceded to grow larger, and nothing that goes in comes out, apart from one soldier, who is rapidly dying as a result of going in. The team of scientists, all with their own weaknesses and struggles, enter the shimmer to reach the center, find out what it is, and ultimately stop it from growing. In the process, they uncover a horrific, yet beautiful world inside the shimmer, and eventually have to confront their own fragility as human beings. Star Wars: Rogue One - 2016
Following the shambles that was Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Disney’s follow up spin-off of the space series turned out to be a massive hit. Rogue One takes place in-between Episode’s 3 and 4. The focus of the plot is the rebel alliance’s attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star.
This epic movie features tons of epic action scenes, long battles, and provides visualizations of planets from the saga that have never previously been seen in such great detail. The character development is brilliant and the acting top-notch. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, this movie is worth a watch - in fact, it can be enjoyed even if you’ve never seen any of the Star Wars movies before. Tau - 2018
This movie is both beautiful and tense. It follows the story of a woman kidnapped and stored in the house of a tech executive who performs psychological torture on her with the intent of completing a complex AI computer program. The house is defended and managed by an AI software called Tau, who narrowly prevents the girl’s escape from the house.
The AI takes the form of a computer program but can interact with things in the house by activating doors, tools, and a terrifying robot. The girl must talk with Tau and teach it things in an effort to convince it to side with her and set her free from the house. While the movie got low ratings, the concept is very interesting and it’s certainly worth a watch. There are several points that highlight the complexity of AI and human relationships. The Expanse (Series)
Okay, so we said we’d just stick to movies, but we lied. The Expanse is possibly one of the best sci-fi shows ever made and is still massively underrated. After being dropped by the Sci-Fi Channel, it was picked up again by Amazon and now has a new season in the making.
The show is set sometime in the future, where the earth is governed by the UN, Mars is an independent military power, and the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter has been colonized by people now known as ‘belters.’ There is a cold war situation between Earth and Mars, and a revolution brewing among the belters. All the while, some mysterious stealth ships of unknown origin start casing a fuss, and threaten to cause a war between the major players. On top of this, a mysterious blue crystal called ‘protomolecule’ has been discovered in the belt - and it can do some very interesting things. With a war on the horizon and mysterious things happening in the belt, The Expanse provides viewers with an intense and binge-worthy story that develops in unexpected ways, as well as a cast of characters unrivaled in modern sci-fi. If you’re looking for a nail-biting new favorite show, then look no further than The Expanse, you won’t regret watching it and will wonder why you’d never picked up on it before.
