Since the 20th century, we acquired the ability to tell these stories with moving pictures we call films. Movies are the modern way of storytelling and the visual medium is bigger than ever. So what are the best movies, modern and old, that we can consider as a classic? Best classic movies Age before beauty, so let’s start with the golden oldies. Starting in the 1920s when movies were known as “talkies” released (“talkies” was the term used for new movies where the actors’ voices could be heard, replacing the silent movie genre). Metropolis was released in 1927 and shaped science fiction movies as we know them today. The story transports us to the future where the rich live their lives in comfort and the poor toil away day by day in order to keep the city running. The film was a milestone for the movie industry and incorporated never seen before visual effects and is considered one of the best films ever made. Gone with the Wind hit audiences in 1939. It’s a whopping 220 min, played out in the south of America during the civil war. The story follows a young lady named Scarlet as she tries to navigate everyday life during America’s most brutal conflict. The Great Dictator was legendary actor Charlie Chaplin’s anti-Nazi masterpiece. The film tells the story of a Jewish barber trying to escape the notorious Nazi regime. Released in 1940 the film was banned in certain parts of Europe, for obvious reasons, although it’s rumoured that the Fuhrer himself was a big Chaplin fan. In 1959 Alfred Hitchcock sent North by Northwest into the world. The master director was well known for his gripping thrillers and this movie is exactly that. After being mistaken for a spy the main character needs to avoid death around every corner and protect his love interest. 2001: A Space Odessy is a look into the future through the eyes of a 1960’s teenage nerd. Stanley Kubrick received mixed reviews for the execution of the film. The film takes place in four stages, where the first is focused on our primitive ancestors and the rest on space exploration. The film gained a cult following in the years to come and Hal the artificial intelligence of the ship will be remembered by geeks and movie connoisseurs alike for decades to come. The above-mentioned movies set the standards for the films we watch today and has deserved to be called classics. We saw some of the best work of directors like Hitchcock and Kubrick that modern directors study in a religious sense. Modern classic movies Moving into the modern era where movies have become a bit more mature in style, graphics and content. What do our modern times consider as classics? The 1970s and 80s saw a rise in the action and horror genres. More great directors poked out their heads and brought some amazing stories to the silver screen. One of the most notable directors to emerge from the shadows is none other than Quinten Tarintino. Writing and directing the likes of Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds. It is debated that Pulp Fiction can be considered as the best movie of all time, only rivalled by The Godfather part 2. Some other modern classics include: Jurassic Park. The movie is a prime example of a modern classic. Directed by Stephen Spielberg the movie follows a group of people in a park that developed methods to resurrect dinosaurs. The film blew audiences away with stunning graphics and a family-friendly storyline. Die Hard is part of the action movie genre boom (pun intended). The film was released on Christmas day and some people watch it annually as a tradition. The Blair Witch Project was the first of the found footage horror genre that was the origin of some outrages rumours. The movie was known for having large numbers of audience members walk out during the screening, because of the shaky footage and the extreme real feeling the story gave off. The movie follows a camera crew that embarks on a quest to find the elusive Blair Witch. The footage was marketed as the found footage of a missing group of investigators. Mars Attacks. This one is for the comedy lovers. Martians invade earth and humanity needs to survive. Funny, action-packed and overall entertaining. Mars Attacks is a great way to spend a Friday night. Classic Disney Movies Uniquely animation saw a large uprising in the modern era. As a result of improving technology, the Animation genre made some unforgettable films that are cemented in movie history. Disney alone would go on to produce some classic movies that would be enjoyed for years to come by young and old.
Lion King. There would be no other way to start the list of classic Disney movies other than the original 1994 Lion King. The story makes you angry, sad, happy, confused and in the mood to karaoke along with all the songs. Tarzan. Bringing the old legend to life in cartoon form, Tarzan is a must watch for little boys or girls that like climbing trees. Beauty and the Beast. Another title on the list that received a remake in recent years. Based on an old fairy tale, like most of the Disney Princess movies. Dance and sing along with furniture to catchy songs and see what chores household objects would do if they were alive. Other animations that were not produced by Disney, but still worth the watch are: A Bug’s Life. Take a trip into, well a bug’s life. Join an Ant in an epic adventure where he discovers himself and life away from the colony. Toy Story is a favourite amongst many children. See what Toys get up to when you’re not around and how day to day life is in the bedroom of a young boy. The animations are a must watch for adults and children alike, just check the age restrictions on the other films before your children see something they shouldn’t. Like a timeless classic.
